Misplaced Manmade Objects
The below photographs of lightboxes are the final pieces from my ‘Misplaced Manmade Objects’ project. A project inspired by the themes of ‘submechanophobia’, the fear of submerged human-made objects (which are either partially or entirely underwater”), and ‘megalophobia’, the fear of large objects (typically human-made). I decided to simplify these two into "Misplaced Manmade Objects". The goal of this project was to explore themes of horror and unease created by juxtaposing man-made objects where they shouldn't beling, though this was quickly twisted into something political, such as the very real terrifying nature of ocean waste. Plastic has also already stepped foot on Mars, how long 'till it spirals out of control?
To the left can be found additional work from the ‘Misplaced Manmade Objects’ project, further exploring the political themes of manmade materials in the ‘wrong’ environment.
The first image (top left) details the idea of ‘megalophobia’, having a large manmade statue on the horizon.
The second image (bottom left) is a graphic piece, asking a simple, yet unfortunately confirmed question, “When will plastic step foot on Mars?”.
The final image (middle) was a mixed media-based zine, combining digital photography with shadow work and alcohol ink textures, documenting plastic as an “invasive species” to Earth’s oceans.
